Thanks for the confirmation; was starting to think everything I know is
wrong... :P

No idea about the first. I'm guessing the second is due to the default
umask (probably set in /etc/profile). Is RedHat's default something
paran^H^H^H unusual, like 133 or 177? Just a wild, wild guess.
